Somerton High School brings flag football to Yuma County

The Toros welcomed two other programs to see local competition as coaches push to bring varsity flag football to local schools

SOMERTON, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Somerton High School flag football welcomed in Cibola and San Luis for exhibition games on Friday night.

The event comes as schools are pushing to bring varsity level competition to Yuma County.

Right now, flag football is an AIA recognized sports for several Phoenix programs, along with schools in Imperial County now competing in CIF competition.

Toros assistant head coach Edward Contreras is hopeful event's like Friday's can bring the movement to the area.

"Ultimately for Yuma, we would look to bring a girl's program for all the high schools in town," Contreras said.

Somerton's program came into Friday's games after forming the team just three weeks earlier.

Contreras says the girls who have come out so far, are putting in extra work just to take the field.

"We're also doing spring sports now, so we've been actually practicing after spring sports that are finishing up, so we've been going later in the day, some of these girls are actually playing multiple sports, so they made the effort to come out and actually play," Contreras said.

Should Yuma area teams begin playing varsity, the AIA currently has it as a fall season sport.
