Mendez picks AWC
Imperial catcher signs LOI with Lady Matadors
EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - An Imperial Valley prep softball standout is keeping her talents close to home.
Less than 2 weeks after the Imperial Tigers bowed out of the C.I.F. San Diego Section Division 3 playoffs, starting catcher Savannah Mendez signs her letter of intent with the Arizona Western College Lady Matadors.
On Friday night, a small gathering of family, friends, teammates and coaches held a special signing ceremony for her at Tom Pechtl Memorial Field in El Centro.
Besides playing for the Tigers the last 4 seasons, she also has been a member of the E-1 Prospects club program for the past year.
The E-1 Prospects helped get her noticed by AWC, with the club program also instrumental in 3 other Imperial Valley prep softball talents becoming Lady Matadors this Spring.
Among them are Calexico's Natalie Gonzalez and Emily Gamboa out of Calipatria.
Mendez and one of her mentors describe the kind of player she will be for the Lady Mats next season.
"On the field, I'm always positive to my teammates and I'm always hard working, and I try my best everything or every new drill that they throw at me."

"That's one thing about her that if her team is feeling down if their team is kind of, kind of like in a hole when when in the middle of a game, she never loses her positivity. So she's always bringing the team up."

A big factor in Mendez's decision for AWC is the school's closer location to home.
In addition to competing for the starting catcher spot, she plans on majoring in Criminal Justice with the hopes of one day becoming a district attorney.
