AWC softball earns a split

Lady Mats struggle to find consistency

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Conference play hasn't been kind to the AWC softball team this Spring.

Wins have come at a premium and the only doubleheader sweep they've mustered so far this year was against Scottsdale last week.

In game #1 of Tuesday afternoon's doubleheader against Mesa, it would be highly competitive, as the game wouldn't be settled until extra innings.

Former Southwest Eagle Illiana Cordova hit a walk-off double to clinch the 11-10 victory.

But, the momentum wouldn't carry over to game #2.

The Lady Mats gave up runs to the Thunderbirds every inning and didn't muster much offense in their 11-2 loss.

AWC will next host Chandler-Gilbert this coming Saturday at Charlie Dine Softball Field on the campus of Arizona Western College.
