AWC coaching legend retires

Patrick Cunningham steps down after 23 seasons

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - 2 days after the amazing NJCAA Tournament run has come to an end for the Arizona Western College Women's basketball team, it's legendary head coach has officially announced his retirement.

Patrick Cunningham is the pioneer of AWC Women's basketball, who is the only head coach in the young history of this program; stepping down after 23 seasons at the helm.

Under Cunningham, the Lady Mats have won 483 games and have averaged 21 victories a season.

The coaching legend has led the Lady Mats to 2 NJCAA Tournament appearance in 2002 and this season, both times reaching the national quarterfinals.

He has coached 13 NJCAA All-Americans, and 83 of his players have gone on to play at the 4-year collegiate level.

The search for his successor begins.
