Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball lands #1 seed ahead of NCAA tournament

(KYMA, KECY/ AP News) - The road to cutting down the nets as national champions on the hardwood begins this week in the NCAA tournament.

And it could be a nice road for the University of Arizona Wildcats who landed one of the four #1 seeds.

The Cats will play as the top seed in the South Region and take on the winner of Bryant and Wright State, who are playing in one of the First Four play-in games on Wednesday.

That game will tip-off on Friday night in San Diego.

Arizona ended the year at (31-3) overall as Pac-12 regular season and tournament champions after beating UCLA on Saturday.

This will be the first time the Cats have been in the big dance since 2018 after serving their postseason ban for a corruption case under former head coach Sean Miller.

In just one year, Tommy Lloyd has quickly returned Arizona to national prominence after a tumultuous stretch from the postseason ban and firings.

It’s the seventh No. 1 seed for Arizona, which will try to return to the Final Four for the first time since 2001. A title run would mark the first Pac-12 team to cut down the nets since Arizona won its only other title in 1997 under late Hall of Famer Lute Olsen.

Stay with News 11 for updates as we will follow the Wildcats on their journey. The sports team will be attending the first two rounds of the tournament in San Diego this coming weekend.
