Yavapai Roughriders score 10 runs combined in the sixth inning on Thursday to stave off elimination in the NJCAA JUCO DI National Softball tournament
YUMA, Ariz. ( KYMA, KECY-TV ) - After losing in the opening round of the NJCAA DI JUCO softball national tournament, the Yavapai Roughriders have had to take the hard road through the elimination bracket. The Roughriders have handled each bump in the road by winning two games on Wednesday and two more on Thursday.
On Thursday, Yavapai found themselves down 4-0 to (5) Wallace State heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. The Roughriders cut the score to 4-3 heading into the sixth inning, them found themselves down 5-3 in the bottom half of the inning. Yavapai exploded for six runs in the sixth to take a 9-5 lead, then hung on to eliminate Wallace State 9-7.
That led to yet another game Thursday night. Yavapai would face (2) Butler Community College in yet another do or die situation. The Roughriders took a 1-0 in the second inning then watched as the Grizzlies scored a run in the third and fourth innings then added two more in the top of the sixth. Once again, Yavapai used the sixth inning to their advantage. The first two batters reached base and Jocelyn Ulrich connected for a three run homerun to tie the score 4-4. The Roughriders would add one more run in the inning and take the lead for the first time since the second inning. Emily Dix would enter the game in the 7th inning to earn the save. Kamryn Kamakaiwi earned her 13th win on the season.
The Roughriders advance to the semi-final round and next face the (4) Grayson Vikings on Friday at 3:00 p.m. at the Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex. (8) San Jacinto - South will play (3) Florida Southwestern State in the winners bracket game at 1:00 p.m.
