Netflix sued for stolen hard drive

(NBC, KYMA) - Netflix is being sued following a theft at its Los Angeles office.

The Hollywood Reporter said a hard drive containing the unreleased film "Fortitude" was stolen from the premises in June.

A lawsuit filed Thursday by filmmaker Simon Afram and his company says the theft makes it significantly harder to sell the movie, a World War II spy thriller starring Nicolas Cage.

The company is seeking at least $105 million.

According to the lawsuit, Netflix had requested a working cut of the movie, but said it was delivered "without proper industry-standard safeguards."

A producer hand delivered the unencrypted drive and told Netflix to delete the files after the screening.

A Netflix executive disclosed ten days later that it was stolen.

The filmmakers say the theft could affect negotiations and they have paused all sales efforts.
