‘Resident Evil: Requiem’ becomes highest-rated game in franchise in over 20 years

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - "Resident Evil: Requiem" has reached the series' highest review scores in over 20 years.

The ninth installment in the franchise, released Friday, February 27, 2026, achieved a nearly 9.5 user score on Metacritic.

It also earned a Metascore of 88 out of 100, which means the game earned generally favorable reviews.

The franchise has only seen a score this high, outside of the remakes released in previous years, back in 2005 with the release of the original Resident Evil 4.

Metacritic has only given one other game a 9.5 score, with that being Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

After the franchise released Resident Evil 6 in 2012 with a Metacritic score of 5.4, the series hit a stop and was considered a failing franchise by some fans.

In 2017, Capcom released Resident Evil 7 under a new game engine, and took the internet by storm with different mechanics, a demo that every content creator was making videos about, and a full dive into the franchise's horror aspects.

From there, the franchise was reborn, with remakes of their original, most popular game releases. The remakes were mostly very well received, and an eighth installment was released with as much praise and love from old and new fans of the series.

Some consider Requiem to be a love letter to fans, and others like the inclusion of new mechanics, and how Capcom has learned from its previous titles and fan feedback for an ultimate experience.
