Robert Duvall, ‘The Godfather’ and ‘Apocalypse Now’ actor, dies at 95
(NBC, KYMA) - Robert Duvall, who earned a lasting place in American movie history with roles in "The Godfather," "Apocalypse Now" and "To Kill a Mockingbird," has died.
According to a statement from his family, the Oscar winner passed away Sunday.
Duvall was an actor's actor.
"If they're gonna hire me, let me do what I wanna do. If not, hire somebody else," Duvall said.
From "The Godfather" to "Apocalypse Now" to the TV miniseries "Lonesome Dove," Duvall's versatility shone in more than 140 films and TV shows over a six decade career, including the brief, but memorable role of Boo Radley in "To Kill a Mockingbird."
Duvall also played Maj. Frank Burns in the original film version of "MASH," a detestable TV executive in "Network," and a warrior without a war in "The Great Santini," which earned him his first of six Oscar nominations for Best Actor.
He would win the Oscar for Best Actor, playing a down-on-his-luck country music singer in 1984's "Tender Mercies."
"I feel that's some of the best work I've done," Duvall expressed.
2015 brought a seventh Oscar nomination. This time, for Best Supporting Actor for 2014's "The Judge," which he co-starred with Robert Downey Jr.
But, Duvall reveled in his time away from Hollywood on a 360 acre, Revolutionary War-era farm in rural Virginia with his fourth wife, Argentine actress Luciana Pedraza.
"You go day by day, and arrive at being grateful for what you have," Duvall shared.
But it's what Duvall gave to his legendary film career that will be his enduring legacy.
According to his family, Duvall did not want a formal funeral service.
They are encouraging fans to honor his memory by "watching a great film, telling a good story around a table with friends, or taking a drive in the countryside to appreciate the world's beauty."
Duvall was 95-years-old.
