‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ earns $1 billion, stays no. 1 at the box office
(CNN, KYMA) - The first weekend of 2026 looked a lot like the last weekend of 2025 at the box office.
Sony's "Anaconda," a meta reboot of the 1997 film starring Paul Rudd and Jack Black, remained in fifth place, earning $10 million.
A24's "Marty Supreme," starring Timothee Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow, fell to fourth place with $12.6 million.
Lionsgate's "The Housemaid," starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, moved up to third place on $14.9 million in ticket sales.
Disney's "Zootopia 2" remained in second place, collecting $19 million for a domestic total of $364 million.
After nabbing the top spot the first two weekends, 20th Century Studios' "Avatar: Fire and Ash" remains in first place, grossing $40 million for a domestic total of $306 million, and joined the first two "Avatar" films by crossing the billion dollar mark worldwide.
In addition, the series finale of "Stranger Things" also played in theaters. According to Variety and Deadline, screenings on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day brought in $25 million or more.
