D’Angelo, Grammy-winning R&B singer, dies at 51

(NBC, KYMA) - D'Angelo, the Grammy-winning R&B singer, has died.

The singer, whose real name was Michael Eugene Archer, was recognized by his raspy yet smooth voice, and garnered mainstream attention with the shirtless "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" music video.

D'Angelo's blend of hip-hop, soul, and gospel helped spearhead the neo-soul movement of the 1990s.

The singer's family confirmed, in a statement Tuesday, he died after a prolonged battle with cancer.

He was 51.
