Top moments and awards at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards

NEW YORK (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) was held in New York Sunday night and for the first time, they were also on CBS.

The VMAs kicked off with a mix of old and new, with Kenny G joining Doja Cat onstage as she performed her song, "Jealous Type."

Hosted by rapper and actor LL Cool J, the show aired on CBS for the first time.

Lady Gaga, who had the most nominations, won the night's first award: Artist of the Year.

"Being an artist is about connecting people all over the world," she said.

Ariana Grande's "Brighter days ahead" won Video of the Year.

"[I] love my fans," Grande expressed.

The Moon Man for Song of the Year went to "Apt." by Rose & Bruno Mars.

The past and present of music was highlighted throughout the night.

Ricky Martin was honored with the inaugural Latin Icon Award while Busta Rhymes took home the "Rock the Bells" Visionary Award.

Tate McRae stunned with her performance of "Sports Car."

Best New Artist Alex Warren showcased his hit, "Ordinary," and Sabrina Carpenter joined contestants from "Rupaul's Drag Race" to make it rain in "Tears."

Mariah Carey was honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, and performed a medley of her iconic hits.

The VMAs also paid tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne with a performance from Yungblud, Nuno Bettencourt, and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry.

Sabrina Carpenter took home the Moon Man Award for Best Album, Ariana Grande also won Best Pop for "Better Days Ahead," and Mariah Carey also won an award for Best R&B.
