Three new blockbusters open in theaters this month
(CBS, KYMA/KECY) - The Fourth of July weekend is important for Hollywood studios as executives hope for a healthy summer at the box office.
What could end up being one of the biggest releases of the year came Wednesday with Universal Pictures' "Jurassic World Rebirth."
The film, which is the seventh installment in the "Jurassic Park" franchise, stars Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali.
According to Box Office Mojo, the film grossed over $82 million so far.
Memorial Day weekend broke records, thanks to the success of two blockbusters, Disney's live-action remake "Lilo and Stitch" and Paramount's "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning" starring Tom Cruise.
Looking ahead, Warner Bros. and DC Studios' "Superman" is also expected to be a substantial moneymaker as it hits theaters next Friday.
Same goes for Marvel Studios' "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," hitting theaters at the end of the month.
"Fantastic Four takes place in a retro, mid 60s universe just like here in Palm Springs, so the film centers around the fantastic four. It stars Pedro Pascal, which is, I guess, America's new sweetheart [as] people can't stop talking about him," said Andrew Freund, an entertainment news expert.
The summer's big winner so far, "Lilo and Stitch," is the second highest-grossing film this year behind Warner Bros.' "A Minecraft Movie."
