Goodyear blimp celebrates 100 years
(CBS, KYMA/KECY) - 2025 is a great year for the Goodyear blimp as the tiremaker is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its iconic airships, with commemorative flights this week in Ohio.
The jumbo airships became a fixture looming large over major sporting events since flying above the 1955 Rose Bowl.
Crows gathered near Akron, Ohio, to watch the blimps take a victory lap above land that once housed Goodyear's original hangar.
"Cool blimps! That's why we came out. Because blimps are cool. I thought he would enjoy it," said Madison Hayberg, a Coventry Township resident.
"People love the airships. And the people specifically in this area here they identify with Goodyear and identify with the airships. They've become part of this community. They've became part of Goodyear," said Jim Crone, Goodyear Manager of Airship Maintenance.
Goodyear's original blimp, nicknamed Pilgrim, took its inaugural test flight on June 3, 1925.
Goodyear has four blimps in its fleet, with three of them based in the u-s.
