Small brush fire on I-8 and Telegraph Pass

Cesar Marquez

YUMA COUNTY, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - There was a small brush fire on the side of the road on Interstate 8 and Telegraph Pass.

According to Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) Media Relations Specialist Bart Graves, they closed the second lane to allow fire trucks to respond.

DPS and Rural Metro were assisting with the small fire and then the Bureau of Land Management took over.

The small fire did impact some traffic but there were no road closures and no injuries.

Dolores Garcia from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) said they received the report of the fire around 2 p.m.

The small brush fire burned about a tenth of an acre.

The fire has now been contained and controlled since 4 p.m.

BLM mentioned they will monitor the area and make sure it is cleared out.

BLM said the fire was caused by a human but is not sure of the full details.

In a phone interview, Dolores Garcia from BLM is asking the community to be careful when traveling, especially when temperatures are rising.

Here's a list of things you can do to prevent fires:

  • Make sure your vehicle is in good working order, tires are in good condition and well inflated as rims on the pavement can spark.
  • Secure all tow chains on trailers, if they drag they also create sparks. These sparks easily light the dry grass on the side of the road on fire.
  • Do not pull your vehicle off the road and park over dry grass. The underside of the car is hot enough to start dry grass on fire.
