US and Iran waiting on President Trump’s approval for tentative deal to end conflict

CBS News

WASHINGTON (KYMA) - CBS News has confirmed a report in Axios that the U.S. and Iran have reached a tentative deal to permanently end the conflict in Iran, all that's left is President Trump's approval.

This comes as both sides launched military attacks overnight.

The U.S. launched another round of military strikes against targets in Iran.

U.S. Central Command confirmed it struck an Iranian site that sent attack drones over the strait of Hormuz.

Iran responded with a ballistic missile launch towards Kuwait that centcom says was successfully intercepted.

This is the second time this week the two sides have exchanged fire.

The U.S. carrying out strikes on Iranian missile sites and mine-laying boats on Monday.

Iranian State TV says the revolutionary guard tracked and fired at an F-35 fighter jet and downed an MQ-9 reaper drone, which CBS News has not independently verified.

The strikes come at a critical stage in peace negotiations as Secretary of State Marco Rubio described Wednesday.

"If there's an agreement to be made, we want that to be made. I think there's been some progress and some interest, and we'll see over the next few hours and days whether progress could be made," said Rubio.

President Trump also argues the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports is adding to the pressure.

"Their economy is in free fall. They have 250% inflation, their money has no value. Their whole economic system is broken down," said President Trump.

Iran's president said Wednesday that hostile forces are now waging an "Economic war" in an attempt to break the country, and called on private sector companies to resist the external pressures brought about by the blockade.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet with his Pakistani counterpart at the White House Friday.

Pakistan has been mediating the peace talks between the U.S. and Iran.
