San Luis, Mexico residents react to killing of El Mencho
SAN LUIS, Mexico (KYMA) - With the murder of the drug cartel leader Nemesio Oceguera "El Mencho," there was some violence across the border.
After El Mencho was killed, there were arson fires and road blockades in most of Mexico.
In San Luis, there were two fires. The first one was an Oxxo, a convenient store located by the city limits.
Locals we spoke to said they feel unsafe with all the violence that broke out across the country.
"It's not fair that because of this smuggler, innocent people have to die," said Gloria Aguayo, a San Luis resident.
"These are things that have to happen. They want to clean up all the bad things that are happening and all the injustice, but it won't be enough this will go on and on," said Everardo Coria, another San Luis resident.
The second fire was at a Pepsi warehouse where two delivery truck were set up on fire intentionally.
Aguayo said she is scare to go out on the streets because no one knows when something bad will happen.
"I was coming back to San Luis yesterday and and my grandson told me not to go out, that there were fires all over the place in Mexicali," said Aguayo.
Some small business in downtown San Luis didn't open Monday as precaution measures.
Traffic was lower than normal, but some locals say this is like calm before the storm.
"It could affect not just San Luis but the entire country. There's nothing we can do. We pray to god that nothing bad happens," said Coria.
Meanwhile, the Mexican military is working together along with state and local police to keep the community safe.
