Over 60 Dogs Rescued from Brawley Home
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - More than 60 dogs were removed from a single home in Brawley last week after shelter officials say the animals were found in extremely poor conditions.
The Humane Society of Yuma stepped in to help, taking in 25 dogs...23 from the home and two others already at the Humane Society of Imperial County. Staff say they were able to help because they had open kennels and room for small dogs.
The Humane Society of Yuma said the dogs were initially scared but quickly became comfortable once they arrived at the shelter. “They were very scared at first. But once they got to the Humane Society they were just very, very happy to be rescued,” Annette Lagunas, Executive Director said.
Devon Apodaca, from the Humane Society of Imperial County, described the conditions as dangerous for both the animals and the people living in the home. “Not only were the inside conditions very poor, but the outside conditions were very poor. It was very dangerous for the people living there,” he said.
The Humane Society of Yuma says these situations often happen when people become overwhelmed and end up with more pets than they can safely care for. Community support was key in helping move the dogs quickly into foster care, rescues, and adoptions. “It’s a good feeling to know that people haven’t forgotten about us and that when we really, really, really need help, we have support from surrounding communities,” Devon added.
Of the 25 dogs taken in by the Humane Society of Yuma, 19 are still at the shelter. Those interested in adopting a dog can contact the Humane Society of Yuma for more information.
Brawley police have not yet commented on whether the person living in the home will face any charges.
