Multiple air quality alerts issued in Mexicali in February

MEXICALI, B.C.(KYMA) - In February, five air quality alerts have been issued in Mexicali due to vehicle emissions.

One of the main pollutants is carbon monoxide, the binational organization Border Environmental Justice is conducting a count of heavy-duty vehicles to analyze their impact on both Imperial Valley and Mexicali and present the findings to authorities.

"We want to try to estimate how this translated into pollutant emissions through the air, because all of this is affecting our life and has serious consequences. I think everyone that we know or even ourselves, have asthma, EPOC, some type of cancer, especially lung cancer and thyroid cancer, which are the heavily influenced," said Fernando David Márquez, Dir. Environmental Justice Border.

Pollution comes from the automobiles traveling throughout the city. There are officially close to 400,000 registered vehicles.
