Suspect injured in officer-involved shooting in Nevada after stealing construction vehicle

HENDERSON, Nev. (NBC, KYMA) - A man driving a stolen front end loader was shot and injured by police in Henderson, Nevada Sunday after he rammed several police cruisers and injured two officers.

"This does not normally happen here," said Francisco, who has lived in the Henderson neighborhood off of Boulder Highway for two years.

Francisco says he went out to run some errands.

"We're trying to go to the store, and that area was closed with yellow tape and the cop told us to go back and go around," Francisco shared.

Around 9:10 a.m. Mountain Sunday, the Henderson Police Department (HPD) received a call about a stolen vehicle.

When officers arrived, they found the suspect driving a front loader.

"As they arrived to attempt to stop the construction vehicle, the driver of the construction vehicle attempted to run over the officer numerous times," said Capt. Haven Tillmon with HPD.

Capt. Tillmon adds that the suspect then rammed two patrol vehicles, lodging them under the front loader.

"The suspect was shot twice, one in the arm and one in the leg," Tillmon said.

The suspect was arrested and taken to the hospital.

During the arrest, police report two officers were hurt, and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"I'm kind of shocked now because like I said, it's real quiet here," Francisco expressed.

Fransisco says a lot of the homes in the area are new, and even more homes are on the way..

Construction sites surround the neighborhood, and investigators say it was on one of the sites where the suspect was able to steal the front loader.

The gate he broke through and tire marks can be seen down North Water Street, all the way up to the location where police stopped him.

"This is the first officer-involved shooting in Henderson [in] 2026," Tillmon remarked.

HPD says it plans to release body camera footage along with more details from the investigation later this week.
