IVC impacted by Department of Education funding cuts

IMPERIAL, Calif. (KYMA) - Nearly $2 million was cut from the fund allocated to Hispanic-serving institutions such as Imperial Valley College (IVC).

IVC prepared in advance to generate financial alternatives that would not cause major impacts for students.

Alexis Villa, Vice President of Student and Academic Services, told Telemundo that they will only be able to use about $500,000 in 2025 and 2026.

"We have a faculty and professionals who are actively applying for funding, whether through foundations or state resources or programs, so we are mobilizing to ensure that services are not interrupted for students," said Villa.

She mentioned that the funds will be used to purchase technology that benefits incoming students.

"I want to be clearer that federal funding from the United States Department of Education is between 2% and 3% of the funds we receive as a school, which is truly significant, because it's millions of dollars, but it doesn't exhaust all the funds and resources we have," explained Villa.

For schools near the border that requested funding, the impact will be close to $15 million.
