Fines to be imposed to anyone who illegally crosses into United States
MEXICALI, B.C. (KYMA) - The United States Embassy in Mexico announced in a video that fines of up to $5,000, or more than 90,000 Mexican pesos, will be imposed on those who cross into the country illegally.
Spokesperson David Arizmendi commented, "A new $5,000 fine for anyone who crosses into the United States illegally."
Experts mentioned the sanctions imposed by the United States government seek to curb illegal crossings. They also noted that, while they already exist, they could be immediate.
"They will surely apply it at the time they detain you or at the time you want to re-enter or complete a procedure for which you have to pay. If you don't pay, they will keep you detained. They haven't provided exact guidelines regarding how the process will work, but the idea is to discourage people from committing this type of crime," said Edgar Castro, a low-visa lawyer.
In another post replicated through X, they mentioned that prison, immediate deportation, and a "lifetime" ban on are other consequences.
