Religious groups hold procession for migrants in San Luis, Mexico

SAN LUIS, Mexico (KYMA) - Religious groups from the U.S. and Mexico had a procession at the border in support of migrant rights.

More than 40 members of the Kino Border Initiative started the procession in Religious groups hold procession for migrants in San Luis, Arizona.

They were joined by a catholic group on the other side of the border.

The goal was to create awareness about the lack of access to protection for migrants in the U.S. and Mexico.

"Giving witness through pilgrimage across the border for the need for migrant and refugee justice at this time. There are so many who are disenfranchised and don't know the next steps," said Pastor Bill Kirsh-Carr of Kino Border Initiative.

Gladys Cervantes, Misioneros de la Eucaristia shelter manager, says it's important to show the reality migrants face and coming together is a sign of hope for a better life for migrants.

"They come very affected because of everything they go through, the mistreatment, the way they are deported, the violence used against them, and the discrimination," said Cervantes.

The procession ended at the Immaculate Conception Church in downtown San Luis, Mexico where the Catholic community had a mass dedicated to the migrants.
