Heat-related deaths lower in Mexicali compared to 2024
MEXICALI, B.C. (KYMA, KECY/T3) - Heat deaths are lower in Mexicali so far this year compared to last year.
The border city has only seen four heat-related deaths. Compare that to 47 heat-related deaths last year.
The Imperial Valley has not had any heat deaths this year, but there have been dozens of heat illnesses.
"We've had a total of 65 heat related illnesses reported, by local hospitals. One of them is, heat stroke. We have, 33 cases of heat exhaustion and, 31 under the category of other, which include fatigue, dehydration," said Karla Lopez, Communicable Disease Control & Prevention manager.
Last year, imperial county had 11 deaths that were most likely due to the extreme heat.
There's a total of 17 cooling centers in the imperial valley.
