U.S. Border Patrol finds drug smuggling tunnel from Tijuana to San Diego

(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - U.S. Border Patrol agents say they uncovered and disabled a large scale drug smuggling tunnel leading to San Diego from Tijuana.

Agents discovered the tunnel back in April of this year.

The tunnel was nearly 40 inches high and 30 inches wide, and in some areas, 50 feet deep. It had electrical wiring, lighting, a ventilation system, and a track to transport contraband.

On Monday, Border Patrol agents alerted Mexican authorities to the discovery, and they found the entrance under freshly-laid tile in a Tijuana home.

Experts say drug tunnels are more uncommon now than they were in the 90s and early 2000s. This is because it's less expensive to move small quantities of fentanyl through ports of entry.
