Less than 200 deported migrants registered at shelter in Mexicali
MEXICALI, B.C. (KYMA, KECY/T3) - 184 deported migrants have been registered at the federal shelter in Mexicali, a relatively small number compared to the deportations during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the Federal Delegate in Baja California (B.C.), the numbers remain low, but there are no current plans to dismantle the mega-shelter in Mexicali.
This is due to the threat of mass deportations under President Donald Trump's administration which still lingers.
"It's a commitment we made to the Mexicans on the other side of the border. During the threat of deportation by the Trump Administration, as long as that threat continues, we will continue to be able to receive them here at this border," said Jesus Alejandro Ruiz Uribe with the Federal Delegate in B.C.
Meanwhile in Tijuana, nearly 2,000 migrants have been registered at shelters from January to May of 2025.
