Cardinal Robert Prevost becomes first ever American Pope

(KYMA, KECY/NBC) - The Catholic Church has elected Cardinal Robert Prevost as the new Pope.

White smoke poured out of the Sistine Chapel Thursday morning to signal the election from the Catholic Church.

For the first time in the Church's 2,000 year history, an American was voted as Pope.

Prevost was born in Chicago in 1955 and ministered in Peru in 1985, then traveling to other missions in Rome.
