IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - An 8-year-old girl was found dead in a car crash on Brawley Avenue and State Route 86, according to California Highway Patrol (CHP).

On March 4, at about 11:05 a.m., a 77-year-old man was driving a 2023 Chevrolet Blazer when he was getting to close to the intersection of Brawley Avenue and State Route 86.

The man drove into a 2011 Toyota Highlander in the left lane of State Route 86 at about 65 miles per hour, hitting the Toyota on its right side causing the Highlander to overturn, says CHP.

The crash resulted in the following:

  • A 38-year-old woman driving the Toyota sustained moderate injuries
  • A 2-year-old girl passenger in the Toyota sustained unknown injuries
  • An 8-year-old girl passenger was ejected from the Toyota and was pronounced dead
  • The 77-year-old man driving the Chevrolet did not sustain any injuries

CHP says says air bags were deployed in the Toyota but not the Chevrolet.

According to CHP, the 8-year-old in the Toyota was the one not restrained at the time of the crash.

The reason for the crash is under investigation.
