Judge blocks new Biden Administration asylum rule
Migrants have been required to seek asylum in countries they pass through on the way to the U.S.
WASHINGTON (KYMA, KECY) - A federal judge blocked a new immigration policy the Biden administration claims has helped lower the number of illegal border crossings since Title 42 ended.
The rule prevents some migrants from seeking asylum in the U.S. if they passed through another country on their way here.
The American Civil Liberties Union originally sued the administration over the policy saying it was almost a replica of the Trump “transit ban."
Many Democrats and migrant activists opposed the rule as the Biden Administration continues to be criticized by both sides of the aisle for its immigration policy.
The asylum ban will remain in place for two weeks following the ruling giving the Biden Administration time to appeal the judge’s decision.
