Arson attack investigation continues

SAN LUIS RIO COLORADO, Son. (KYMA, KECY) - Families continue to mourn the 11 people killed in an arson attack at a bar in San Luis, Mexico.

More victims were buried on Monday.

Meanwhile, the suspect is still behind bars.

Flowers and candles remain close by the bar to remember the victims, meanwhile, the suspect has been formally charged.

Betsy Burgos was one of this weekend’s fire victims, her family and friends gave her their last goodbye on Monday.

"It’s very hard for us because she was one ours, it’s hard as a family what we are going through. We never expected to live something like this. She was at the wrong place," expressed Chely Diaz, aunt of arson attack victim.

The suspect identified as Jose Luis was arrested at the military checkpoint outside San Luis Saturday morning.

Sonora's district attorney said he was trying to escape to the town of Sonoyta, Sonora.

"He was traveling with a woman; we don’t believe she was involved in the fire. He was using her just to escape and she’s a very close relative," stated Sonora's District Attorney Gustavo Salas.

Sonora’s district attorney said Jose Luis is facing 11 counts, including homicide.

"Obviously if we apply the criteria of some other charges, he could spend his life in prison," said Salas.

Victims' families want justice and hope law enforcement does its part to have a safer city.

"We want justice. We hope it doesn’t put this case to the side. Make sure to investigate go to the bottom of this and I hope the authorities have more control over places like for our youth," stated Diaz.

The street will remain closed until the investigation is completed.
