It's why LifeStream Blood Bank is asking for your help.
The LifeStream Blood Bank performed its first blood drive of 2023 in the Imperial Valley.
The organization which serves the majority of southern California provides lifesaving blood products and services to more than 80 southern California hospitals and medical facilities.
“Knowing the importance… knowing that I’m O-Positive... knowing nationwide there’s a huge blood shortage… I want to do my part in helping people,” said Manuel Alaniz, a phlebotomist at Innercare Health in Brawley.
LifeStream says the Imperial Valley is facing a severe blood shortage.
Adrian Perez is a Mobile Site Supervisor for Lifestream.
“If we were to have a major disaster right now," said LifeStream mobile site supervisor Adrian Perez. "We only have a day and a half supply of blood to fill our hospitals.”
Barbara Nilson, a 71 year-old from Holtville, shares the remarkable amount of blood she's donated over her life.
"I have donated more than eleven gallons in my life," said Nilson. "There are so many people out there that need blood... Need whole blood and they run out of it... Especially during COVID, people quit giving."
Alnaiz encourages those who can to do donate to help save lives.
“It’s really important if people can donate because not everybody can donate," said Alnaiz. "If you are able to donate, we need to do our part you know.”
Perez says the next blood drive will take place at Pioneers Memorial Hospital on February 3rd.
