Storm Ian strengthens to hurricane, expected to touch down in southern Florida

(KYMA, KECY/ CNN) - Florida officials say they could start issuing evacuation orders Monday as Tropical Storm Ian has strengthened into a hurricane - and is likely heading for the state.

Forecasters say the storm has officially become a hurricane and early evacuations could be in place, which they say is especially important for people like seniors who need extra time.

Forecasters are still working out Ian's precise path but say people across Florida should prepare for the worst - from heavy rain to dangerous storm surge.

Many people in Tampa are loading up on sandbags and Tampa's mayor says the city's been preparing its storm water system to accommodate the hurricane.

The state says it's partnering with FEMA to have resources ready, but that doesn't mean people should ignore evacuation orders.
