Virginia Pena, 39, has been identified by Yuma police as the victim in Sunday morning's shooting when a dark-colored pick-up truck fired shots at an SUV with four people inside.

The Yuma Police Department (YPD) responded to a call of shots fired near 9th Street and Avenue A just before 3 a.m.

Officers arrived to find a tan GMC Yukon with Pena and three other people inside. Pena was the only one injured.

A nearby resident says the road was blocked off until about 10 a.m.

“I was hoping that nobody got hurt or anything, but you know, it’s tragic what happened. I never thought it would happen in my own community, you know, but it’s just sad things like that happen,” says Yuma resident Evelyng Saenz.

The Yukon was reportedly traveling near 1st Street and 15th Avenue when a dark-colored pick-up truck fired several gunshots at the SUV. The Yukon then stopped near ninth street and avenue a and called for help.

“I just saw a cop over here in this corner just blocking. The whole area was closed. I was just hoping that whoever— whatever happened was— they’re ok," explains Saenz.

Pena was pronounced dead at the scene and no other injuries have been reported. YPD says this is an active investigation, though no suspects have been identified.

Anyone with information is asked to call YPD at (928) 783-4421 or 78-CRIME to remain anonymous.
