Gas price update, now dropping after peak in June

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - AAA Gas Prices show Yuma County's current average at $4.67 when just one year ago, the average was $3.13.

Gas prices dropped close to 30 cents from just a month ago.

The state’s average also dropped 55 cents since then.

AAA data shows a peak in gas prices on June 17, with Yuma's gas hitting $4.97.

Aldo Vazquez of AAA says different factors play into why prices are going down.

“The main cause of why prices are going down is because one, we’re seeing that demand has gone down," said Vazquez. "So, there’s not a lot of people fueling up right now and the price of crude oil has also gone down it’s now in the mid-90s.”

A mom from San Luis, Tania Garcia, is looking forward to visiting Yuma more often as prices are slowly going down, saying she went from driving to the city a few times a week to only coming here if she needs to.

“Now I don’t even like to fill up in my tank," said Garcia. "I just put in $20 and come if I need to come to Yuma as a necessity.”

We asked Vazquez if we can expect to see lower gas prices, he says it all depends on the overall cost of crude oil and the global economy.

The current average of gas in Yuma is $4.67.

Yuma in particular has cheaper prices than the rest of the state.

“One of the main reasons for that is the pipeline that comes through the east, that one goes through Tucson. So, that’s why you see a lot of southern counties with cheaper gasoline," said Vazquez.

As the price of crude oil fluctuates, so do our gas prices.

So although we are currently in a downward trend, AAA says anything can change depending on the global economy.
