New National Suicide Hotline rolls out on Saturday with different number

(KYMA, KECY/ CNN) - A new universal suicide crisis hotline is launching and will be available in every state starting Saturday.

Now, it has a different ring to it: the three-digit number of 988.

The original suicide line has operated as 10 digit number for more than 15 years.

The reason for the change is that health officials are trying to reach more people because one caller out of every six hangs up before talking to anyone with the hotline.

The new line with over $400 million in federal funding, hopes to cut response time and answer more calls.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline will have trained counselors available 24/7.

Meanwhile, the current number-- 1-800-273-TALK-- will also stay in place.

Year after year, tens of thousands of people in the U.S. take their own lives. In 2020, the CDC said it happened every 11 minutes.
