UPDATE: Woman dies after getting hit by car on W. 8th Street and S. Clifford Way

More details on what happened during a car crash

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Yuma County deputies have confirmed the name of the woman fatally hit on 8th Street and Clifford Way.

YCSO says 60-year-old Nanette Parrish was on the sidewalk by Clifford Way but stepped off of it.

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) says Parrish was in critical condition before passing away at the hospital.

They say they're not sure why she stepped off of the sidewalk before getting hit and that is when deputies say the driver of a sedan struck her.

She was taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center but died from her injuries.

YCSO's Public Affairs Specialist, Tania Pavlak spoke on the incident.

“Unfortunately, this incident did involve a pedestrian being hit near a very trafficked area down 8th Street. The vehicle was traveling westbound and the pedestrian was traveling the opposite side on the sidewalk. So the pedestrian was traveling eastbound. And so, when the pedestrian did leave the sidewalk, she ended up being struck by the vehicle,” said Pavlak.

YCSO says the driver made sure to stop and check on Parrish before authorities arrived.

The driver was not injured and alcohol was not a factor.

As we enter a hot summer, YCSO wants locals to stay safe while outside. Especially when the sun comes down.

“So now that the temperatures are starting to cool down in the evening or maybe in the morning during their morning walks, we do want to remind people to stay vigilant of any vehicles approaching the area especially if you are looking to cross the street,” said Pavlak.

To keep these incidents from happening, YCSO urges the public to spread these reminders to the youth.

“Be watchful and to use all your senses when you are going on walks, remind them to look both ways before crossing the street," said Pavlak. "Keep an ear out for vehicles approaching you, so would like to remind the community to stay safe.”

According to the CDC, one in six people who died in crashes in 2020 were pedestrians.

They offer tips to stay safe like increasing visibility when walking late at night by carrying a flashlight and avoiding distractions like having earbuds on when walking.
