Arizona man facing murder charges for 1989 cold case

MESA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A man is facing murder and sexual assault charges in Arizona connected to two decades-old cold cases.

Mesa police and the FBI announced that they arrested 58-year-old Thomas Cox in Colorado.

He is accused of a homicide and sexual assaults committed more than 30 years ago.

The homicide happened back in 1989.

Police say a woman was found dead in her apartment.

The victim had also been sexually assaulted.

A second case in 1990 involved a woman who was also sexually assaulted after a man broke into her apartment, but she survived the attack.

Authorities used DNA and fingerprint comparisons to identify Cox as a suspect.

He faces several charges including murder, sexual assault and kidnapping.
