California to lift indoor mask mandate starting February 15

Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - California's statewide indoor mask mandate will end next week for everyone who is vaccinated.

California was among the first states to require face coverings in public places which has been in effect since June 2020.

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday that the mask requirement will expire on February 15, two days after the state hosts the super bowl in Inglewood.

However, unvaccinated people must still continue to wear masks indoors.

Counties with stricter rules such as Los Angeles and much of the Bay Area may still keep the mask mandates in place.

Newsom cited a 65% drop in COVID-19 cases since the peak of the omicron surge.
