Poway synagogue shooter receives second life sentence

The suspect avoided the death penalty under a plea agreement

POWAY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The suspect in the deadly 2019 shooting at a southern California synagogue was sentenced to a second life sentence.

According to the Department of Justice, John T. Earnest faces life plus 30 years behind bars.

Earnest previously avoided the death penalty under a plea agreement in July.

Armed with an AR-15 style rifle, Earnest who was 19 at the time, killed one and injured three others, including the rabbi and an 8-year-old girl, as they worshiped inside the synagogue in the San Diego suburb of Poway.

There were more than four dozen people inside the synagogue at the time.
