Two children, two adults killed in “wrong-way” California crash
Police found baby in the arms of dead passenger
CRYSTAL LAKE, Calif. (KYMA, KECY/CNN) - Two children and two adults are dead after a Jeep traveling the wrong way down Interstate 80 (I-80) rammed into their Sedan, killing everyone inside, but the baby.
The California Highway Patrol says they received a 911 call at about 4:43 a.m. Saturday. The caller reported a driver driving the wrong way down the interstate.
CHP Sergeant Steve Casetta confirms the Jeep was the car at fault, however, he's not sure yet why the person decided to drive against traffic.
"Alcohol may have been a factor in the wrong as way driver," he revealed. "Too early to tell, but that's the assumption."
Officers share that both children killed were under 10 years old. They also report arriving at the scene to find a surviving baby held in the arms of one of the adults killed.
"Most of the time, if it does happen, it's a solo vehicle off the roadway and into a tree or into a ditch, but rarely does it happen with a wrong-way driver and several younger kids," Sgt. Casetta added.
The CHP confirms the baby was airlifted for immediate care, while the Jeep driver and another surviving individual were taken to a hospital.
CHP crews were obligated to shut down the interstate eastbound for 17 miles, leaving traffic into the Sierras at a standstill.
