Bicyclist killed in car crash identified
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A vehicle versus bicyclist crash leaves one person dead in the foothills.
The bicyclist has been identified as 75-year-old, Ramon Alvarez-Cerrillos from Yuma
Just after 7:00 p.m. Sunday night, the Yuma County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) responded to the area of Fortuna Road near Mesa Del Sol.
"The initial investigation revealed that the bicyclist was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes on Fortuna Road," describes YCSO Public Affairs Specialist Tania Pavlak. "An uninvolved vehicle traveling northbound, swerved to avoid colliding with the bicyclist. The driver of a red Polaris RZR traveling behind the uninvolved vehicle was unable to change lanes in time and struck the bicyclist."
Deputies confirmed the bicyclist did not survive the crash.
"The bicyclist, identified as Ramon Alvarez-Cerrillos, 75, of Yuma, AZ was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries," shares Pavlak. "Next of kin has been notified. This case remains under investigation. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this collision."
Fortuna Road was closed from 24th Street to 26th Street for investigations.
The YCSO would like to remind the community to ride safely and obey all traffic laws when operating a bicycle.
