San Luis man accused of stabbing his wife

CBS 13's April Hettinger reports on how police's quick action saved the woman's life

SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A man is behind bars ready to face a judge for allegedly stabbing a woman with children present in the home.

The San Luis Police Department (SLPD) responded to a disturbance call when they noticed a broken window and heard a female screaming.

"There was known to have been children inside the house," said Lt. Marco Santana.

The woman originally called police and her husband left the home. She called 9-1-1 again when he came back to the home.

"It ultimately escalated to the husband having a knife and attacking the wife," Lt. Santana stated. "Obviously, we received a call and officers arrived on scene. They noticed a broken window and could hear a female screaming."

Through the window, officers saw a man holding a knife and a female with visible stab wounds.

The 27-year-old man, Marcos Rubio Diaz, complied with police commands to drop the knife.

He was arrested and booked into the Yuma County Detention Center for attempted 1st degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Judge Juan M. Guerrero set the suspect at a $500,000 cash-only bond.

"You will have no contact whatsoever with the victim in this case whether it be telephonic, electronic or by any other means," Judge Guerrero explained.

The fire department treated the victim on-scene, but officers later transferred the woman to a hospital. She has undergone multiple surgeries so far.

Victim advocates like Maria Cecilia Cruz of South County Domestic Violence Coalition say domestic violence needs to be reported early on.

"I'm just worried that if women don't start reporting these crimes of domestic violence, this is just going to be a vicious cycle," Cruz explained.

The suspect will be back in court on August 31.
