Tips for hiking in Arizona heat
(KYMA, KECY) - The weather continues to warm up and it's important to practice safe hiking in Arizona.
Arizona State Parks says more than 200 hikers are rescued every year in Phoenix alone. But to keep you and your group safe, be sure to follow the hiking safety tips below.
Bring water
As the triple-digit weather is here, make sure you drink a lot of water. Always make sure you continue to stay hydrated during your hike. Only you know yourself, so pay attention to what your body tells you. Park officials recommend you drink at least half a liter to a full liter or more every hour.
Hike with Friends
Make sure you're never alone, especially with this weather. Always have a group beside you to help each other out and call for help if needed. Always carry a cell phone and let others know how long you plan to be gone.
Be prepared
Always check the weather and dress appropriately in this heat. The heat can sneak up on you. Wear a hat, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing. Be sure to check the trail conditions before you go.
Pet safety
Although we love to include our furry friends in every outing, make sure you understand your pet's abilities and pay attention to their behaviors. Pets often heat up and cool off differently than humans. Heatstroke can be life-threatening for pets and need plenty of water and shade to stay calm.
