Small Business Admin launches Sen. Mark Kelly initiative

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The  United States Small Business Administration (SBA) is launching a new grant program that was crafted by Sen. Mark Kelly. There's $100 million set aside in President Biden's 'American Rescue Plan.'

The senator says it will strengthen and advance the outreach to businesses in underserved communities.

It’s an opportunity to connect with non-profit organizations in the smallest rural and urban communities in the country.

In Yuma County, Arizona Western College’s Small Business Development Center is an SBA partner and can assist on many levels.

The director, Randy Nelson says, “One of the main parts of this [is technical assistance. So, are they compliant with the laws do they have the right licenses and permits, are they expanding are they changing their business idea, and going from direct sales to online sales. You know this is we want to make sure the businesses are prepared to be in business three to five or 10 years into the future.“

According to the SBA, organizations, and companies owned by women, people of color, or veterans have suffered the greatest economic loss from the pandemic.

The grant awards will range from $1 million to $5 million for a two-year performance period.

Applicants have until July 12 to submit their applications.
