Wrong-way driver leaves 3 dead

Sends an additional individual to the hospital

PHOENIX, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A head-on collision near Camelback Road on the Loop 101 in Glendale leaves three dead Sunday morning.

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) says it all began around 2:30 a.m. when they received a call about a wrong-way driver heading south in the northbound lanes on the Loop 101.

Moments later, troopers learned the same motorist driving counterflow to traffic had just collided head on with another vehicle. Sergeant Jacob Melki, public information officer for DPS, emphasizes that some debris from the crash actually flew over onto the southbound lanes, and hit another car.

According to Melki, the driver of the wrong-way vehicle, plus the man and woman whom were struck head on, died at the scene.

Northbound lanes were closed for several hours at Camelback Road, but the DPS reopened the road around 8 a.m.
