58 COVID-19 patients are being treated at local hospitals
IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY), As coronavirus cases continue to climb in Imperial County, local hospitals continue to adapt to meet the needs of their patients.
According to the El Centro Regional Medical Center the hospital is in good shape to handle more patients if the need arises.
COVID-19 cases in Imperial County have hit more than 400, fortunately, more than 200 have recovered from the virus and according to the Imperial County Public Health Department as of Thursday there are more than 200 active cases in the valley.
58 of those people are being treated at local hospitals according to data received from the El Centro and Brawley hospital.
El Centro Regional Medical Center said the hospital is licensed to care for a total of 161 patients.
“Today we have 110 patients so we have available beds of 51. Of those patients that we have, 41 are COVID positive," said Dr. Adolphe Edward, ECRMC CEO.
Despite rumors of the hospital being filled to capacity, the hospital says they have enough beds for patients, plus an overflow plan that allows for additional space.
“Right now we only have 12 patients in the ICU, we have a capability of 28 beds, so we have plenty of ICU beds that are available," said Louise Kenney, ECRMC Chief Nurse.
We also reached out to Pioneers Memorial Healthcare District for an update according to the hospital they have 17 coronavirus patients, 6 of those patients are on ventilators.
Reopening the economy in Imperial County will be influenced heavily on whether or not local hospitals can handle a surge in COVID-19 cases. With that in mind, the county is expected to make a decision tomorrow morning.
