17 Navajo Police Department employees test positive for coronavirus
Navajo Nation is among hardest-hit in the country
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - On Friday the Navajo Police Department confirmed 17 cases of coronavirus (COVID-19).
Of these, 11 include police and six are civilian personnel. The department says all are currently in quarantine.
Police officials say they are working with both private and local healthcare facilities to increase staff testing for all police districts.
“We knew there was a high probability that this would occur and we made every decision possible to try and mitigate that probability.” Chief Francisco said. “As a leader, one of the hardest decisions we make is the decision to push forward during times of crisis.”
“As more cases were confirmed, we couldn’t help but be devastated. Our staff and their families are always in our thoughts as they fight everyday to heal themselves. I have nothing but appreciation for our courageous employees and we continue to pray for their speedy recovery.” Chief Francisco added.
On Wednesday the Office of Chief of Police bought food items and distributed them among infected employees and officers. The packages included letters of support from the Navajo Nation.
“We want them to know that we care for them, we are here for them, and we will get through this together.” Chief Francisco said.
As of April 24, there are 1,540 positive cases of COVID-19 on the Navajo Nation.
