Republican ‘unforced errors’ threaten path to Senate control
(KYMA, KECY/ AP News) - The prospect of a red wave grows throughout the country but a series of Republican missteps including recruiting stumbles, weak fundraising and intense infighting is threatening the GOP’s path to the Senate majority.
A lot of it began when Senate Republican leaders were disappointed after spending months privately encouraging Arizona Governor Doug Ducey to run, who announced he would not run last week.
But the GOP’s shortcomings extend well beyond Arizona.
Republican candidates in Arizona, Georgia and Nevada are struggling to keep pace with Democratic fundraising. Meanwhile, recruiting failures have dashed GOP hope in other states such as Maryland and New Hampshire.
With Democrats confronting historic headwinds and the weight of an unpopular President, a Republican Senate majority is easily within reach in a 50/50 split, but with eight months until election day, the political landscape remains in flux.
