RNC chair race key under the radar election to watch
(CNN) - In five days, Republican delegates will meet to vote for the chair of their party. This is known as the Republican National Committee chair.
For further context, RNC chair is an important role as you're essentially the head of the party nationally. It's the party chair who helps shape delegate rules, primary election dates, and is the main spokesperson for the party in the media.
Furthermore, Incumbent RNC chair Ronna Romney McDaniel is in between a rock and a hard place. While she is the the niece of Mitt Romney, McDaniel has primarily sided with Trump. McDaniel even spoke out against her uncle after he published an op-ed being critical of the president.
She called his piece "disappointing and unproductive". However, she is receiving a challenge from the right. Mike Lindell of MyPillow is one entrant, taking sides with former President Trump. Lindell said that results in Florida's Dade County seemed suspicious, accusing Governor Ron DeSantis of inflating numbers to make himself look stronger against Trump.
But the strongest candidate against McDaniel is attorney Harmeet Dhillon. She represented Kari Lake in parts of the Arizona election lawsuit. While McDaniel has largely been silent on the supposed election fraud issues, Dhillon has expressed support for an investigation. Trump has yet to make an endorsement, but his support will be a game changer.
