Anchor dead, family hurt in domestic incident
(CNN) - A Detroit radio news anchor is dead following an apparent domestic dispute that left four others injured.
Police in the Detroit suburb of Chesterfield Township are still processing the bloody scene they discovered Friday Morning.
"I mean, I don't know how people can do stuff like that," John Stewart, a neighbor, spoke.
It's been a rollercoaster of a day for residents near this Chesterfield condo complex from the shock of hearing police sirens, to the horror in hearing the details of what took place.
"Our investigation has determined that this is an isolated tragedy that does not present a danger to our community at this time," Chief Brian Bassett explained.
The investigation so far
According to Chesterfield Police, around noon, someone driving by found a 35-year-old woman, and her five-year-old daughter who escaped from this condo building.
The woman had been stabbed, and both were injured.
Police then forced their way inside, where they found the 57-year-old father dead, an injured 10-year-old boy was bound and beaten in the closet, and in the basement, the alleged suspect who was overdosing, and had self-inflicted wounds.
"It's terrible, I mean, he's the same age of my grandson and so you know, it just makes you think," Stewart cried.
Soon after, WWJ Radio identified the man killed as their overnight anchor Jim Matthews.
He was the children's father, and returned home going off the air at 5:00am.
In a statement, the station said in part, "There have been many tears shed in our newsroom today and Jim will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jim's family and friends during this difficult time."
"He just seemed like a reserved man, very quiet and kind of shy but he seemed to really like his kids," Stewart lamented.
Further discoveries
Neighbors say the suspect lived across the street, and often seen with the woman.
Police also say he visited the home frequently.
His exact relation, still unknown.
"He was welcomed into the home initially, from that point it's still too early to go into what happened," Bassett detailed.
The suspect and the five-year-old girl are in stable condition but the mother and 10-year-old boy are still critical as police continue to piece together this chaotic and horrific tragedy.
"The Chesterfield Public Safety Department will not rest until we have received justice for our victims," Bassett proclaimed.
A grade school across the street from the crime was on lockdown for a brief time Friday.
Police say the kids were never in danger, it was only to keep them from seeing the crime scene across the street.
